Félicité Rwemarika

Built women's football in Rwanda out of nothing after the genocide

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Rwanda Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

She started putting girls' football teams together in the years after 1994, when the argument that sport might help a traumatised country heal was not one anyone was making. She ended up on the International Olympic Committee.

Félicité Rwemarika is a Rwandan women's rights campaigner who founded the Association des Kigali Women in Sports, building girls' and women's football in Rwanda in the aftermath of the genocide as a way of drawing traumatised young women back into public life.

She became a member of the International Olympic Committee and is among the most prominent figures in African women's sport.
