His bronze over 800 metres at Athens in 2004 was the first medal Rwanda had ever won at an Olympic or Paralympic Games.
Jean de Dieu Nkundabera was disabled by a landmine, one of very many Rwandans injured in the war and the genocide, and came to wheelchair racing through the rehabilitation programmes set up afterwards.
At the Athens Paralympics in 2004 he took bronze in the 800 metres. It was the first medal of any colour that Rwanda had won at an Olympic or Paralympic Games — a country that had been through the events of 1994 ten years earlier, and whose sporting infrastructure had been destroyed along with everything else.
He competed again in Beijing in 2008 and has worked since in disability sport administration in Rwanda, where he has argued that the country's disabled athletes are among its most credible international competitors and are funded as an afterthought. Rwanda's Paralympic programme, and the sitting volleyball and wheelchair racing teams that followed, are built on the opening he made.
