King from 1931 to 1959, the first to be baptised a Catholic, and a monarch who spent his reign pushing against illiteracy and poverty under colonial rule.
Mutara III Rudahigwa was King of Rwanda between 1931 and 1959, and the first Rwandan king to be baptised into the Catholic church, as Charles Léon Pierre.
He worked throughout his reign on literacy and on the material conditions of Rwandans. He died in July 1959, months before the revolution that ended the monarchy.
