A poetess of the Abasinga who hid the exiled heir at the risk of her own life, became queen mother, created Impakanzi poetry and founded the seat of poets that carried Rwanda's history for four hundred years.
Nyirarumaga was born into the Abasinga clan and came to the royal court as a young poetess.
When Ruganzu II Ndoli was a fugitive from his enemies, before he reached refuge in Karagwe, she hid him at the risk of her life. On his return she became his adoptive mother and took the title of queen mother.
She created the Impakanzi form of dynastic poetry and established the Intebe y'Abasizi, the seat of the poets at Kiruri hill in Huye, as the institution charged with keeping the poetic tradition. In a kingdom without writing, that tradition was the historical record, and it is largely through her that Rwanda's past survived to be written down.
